Did you Vote?

Pretty much every election year it happens the same way.  I see all of the signs, billboards, and commercials for all of the candidates running for office.  Certain names stick out to me, because they are catchy names.  Like Beau Babka, or Philpot.  But then I realize that it is November 1st, the night before Election Day, and I don't know who I'm supposed to vote for.  So then I think, maybe I just won't vote?

Deep down I just know that isn't an option.  I am going to vote.  I really do think it is important to vote and wish that more people did.  But now I just wish I knew more about it.  As soon as I start reading about the candidates I usually get frustrated because it seems like all of them are promising good things.  So then I wonder should I just go and vote straight-party?  I read the Constitutional Amendments and really wonder what the difference is.  And the problem is that I don't know, but I want to know.

Also this year I had someone tell me exactly how to vote.  Which was helpful, since I didn't know, and I respect this person's opinion, but at the same time, it bothered me.  Why should I vote exactly the way someone tells me to?  Somehow that didn't sit right with me because I wanted to be able to form my own opinions.

So many of the people I talked to this year about it said that they weren't voting because they didn't know enough about it and so they wouldn't be making an educated vote.  And I don't know why this bothered me more this year than it has before.  Maybe I am growing up a little bit?  I just realized that I want to care, and I want to know.  This is where I live and where I am going to raise my kids someday.  So while I did my best to quickly form opinions and go out and vote, next time around I am going to be more aware of what is going on, the candidates, and the issues.  Anybody with me on any of this?

I totally agree! Every time any sort of election comes around, Dan votes and I realize I have no idea what is going on with politics these days. So I'm trying to pay more attention and read more. I want to be more informed so I can feel like I'm voting for something I care about.

By the way, your Lake Powell pictures made me want to be there RIGHT now. I'm not ready for winter.

Well said! I did vote, but it wasn't easy. I tried to stay informed but when it came down to it I got really torn between canidates, especially hearing their different adds even as I was driving to vote. That pamphlet they mail out was helpful but not really. It was funny too because when I was in line to vote they had the pamphlets for people to read waiting in line and I thought "shouldn't you have made up your mind before now and not while waiting in line?" Then again I was still going back and forth in my own mind so how could I judge?
Anyways, sorry to blab on so. I'll admit I often listen to talk radio (local and national) when I'm driving around. Some of them are a bit extreme, but at least I can hear about some of the issues and make my own conclusions about things.
I feel like I could keep talking about this but I better stop. Maybe we'll have to talk about this sometime in person. :)

I'm all the way with you. I even waited in line with Eddie for over an hour, got to the front, and didn't vote! Partially because I didn't take the time to register and partially because I didn't know who to vote for. Enough is enough! I think it's so important and such a privilege. Good insight though chels. We'll be ready next time around... :)
